Kindergarten: Leaf Prints This project was an introduction to watercolor and printing. Students were taught the wet-on-wet watercolor technique - using a water wash on the paper, on which a color is applied while the paper is still wet.   The myriad patterns and textures found on fall leaves, which were collected around campus were transferred by placing wet leaves onto a yellow underpainting. Students painted on top of the leaves with a variety of colors. Leaves must stay on background until completely dry! The result - soft backgrounds contrasted with beautiful textured patterns from nature! TK/Kindergarten:     Discovering Lines Many people claim they cannot be artists because they "can't draw a straight line". Using the strategies of this unit "Discovering Lines" anybody who can hold a pencil can learn to draw. Drawing is basically a matter of close observation, breaking the subject into lines and shapes, and of course lots of practice.  This unit starts with a teacher/student discussion that anything we wish to draw, simple or complex, can be broken up into the "five line and shape families" (based on "Monart" methodology).  Students learned that they can use lines to create a representational or an abstract piece of art.  Students practiced drawing a variety of lines and shapes by copying simple and complex line designs. The Bacich TK-4th grade art program is off to a fabulous start.  During our first art lesson of the new school year, we established routines and rules and each one of our 680 students got to decorate their very own art journals. Each grade level had the opportunity to explore a grade-level appropriate art technique or activity.  For example, TK and Kindergarten experimented with a "crayon resists marker" technique. First grade students designed their journal covers with abstract lines and shapes. Second grade students enjoyed an "Advanced Scribble" drawing activity using "only 3 colors and the same color cannot touch a wall".  Third grade students were introduced to the Indian "Mehndi Henna" hand design and decorated the tracing of their hands.  Our fourth grade artists personalized their art journal covers with “Zentangle" designs and patters. Kindergarten:     Self Portraits inspired by Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), the artist who painted herself is Mexico's most famous female artist. She painted her self portraits in bright colors, with ribbons and flowers through her thick black braids. She liked to wear her eyebrow to look like the wings of a bird. Frida never smiled in her paintings because she was often in pain. When she was eighteen she was badly hurt in a terrible bus accident. For the rest of her life she suffered from complications from her injuries and often captured her pain and suffering in her paintings. In1929 Frida married the famous artist Diego Rivera. Due to her injuries Frida had to spend a lot of time staying in bed. To pass time she painted. Frida  suggested, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best."  She had big mirror installed in the canopy over her bed.
