Even though we cannot have art class together at the moment I would like to invite you to continue to be creative and learn new art techniques, connect with artists from the present and the past and integrate visual arts with science. I will be posting videos of visual arts assignments and projects on this blog. I would like you to explore and complete 1-2 art assignments per week. You are welcome to do more! You may pick and choose from the video menu below. I would love to see your completed artworks. Start Wars Inspired: Flip Book

In this video you will learn how to make a simple flip book. A flip book or flick book is a book with a series of pictures that very gradually change from one page to the next, so that when the pages are turned rapidly, the pictures appear animated by simulating motion or some other change. Printmaker John Barnes Linnett, from Birmingham England, was the first artist to patent the flip book under the name of “The Kinograph a new optical illusion” on March 18, 1868. 

Supplies you will need: pencil, pen, or any other drawing tool, post-it pad or small journal, and of course your imagination. Have fun! 😊

Water

The week of April 27, the theme is water. Therefore, the art projects and activities I have planned for you this week are all connected to water. First up is the Sea Turtle. I love sea turtles! Two years ago I was lucky to travel to Costa Rica and watch baby sea turtles being released into the ocean. Baby turtles hatch from eggs. The baby sea turtles I saw were born in a conservation hatchery. Worldwide, six of seven sea turtle species are classified as threatened or endangered. That's why marine biologists around the world have organized turtle hatcheries to help the sea turtle population to grow in a protective way.

Cool Facts About Sea Turtles They think jellyfish are delicious. ... They're the oceans' lawnmowers. ... They cannot retract into their shell like other turtles. ... They spend 90% of their lives in water. ... They've been around for a very, very long time. ... They can hold their breath for five hours underwater. ... They live to about 100 years. Have you been spending a lot of time indoors looking at a screen lately? If so, then this 3 minute video is just what you need. It's a sunny day let's go outside and paint with water! This is a fun, relaxing activity for the whole family. Materials you'll need: a bucket or large container filled with water, old house paint brush or rag, water spray bottle, and of course your imagination.

Earth Day

On Wednesday, April 22, 2020 we celebrate International Earth Day. In honor of Earth Day I have put together two art projects for you. For both projects you will be asked to upcycle items.

What is upcycling?
Upcycling is also known as creative reuse. It is the process of converting old or discarded materials into something useful, artistic and beautiful. From trash to treasure! 

Are Recycling and Upcycling the same? 

Actually no, and the difference is important. Upcycling is what many artists do. Reusing waste without destroying it in order to form something new. Recycling takes waste products, breaks them down, then forms them into something new. Both upcycling and recycling are great methods to keep products and packaging out of landfills and helps our planet earth.
